How long does it take to go live with OpenBorder?
Most brands are live and shipping internationally within 2 weeks of signing. That includes connecting your Shopify store, setting up your markets, localising checkout, and configuring shipping, taxes, and duties. If you're migrating from another platform like Passport or Global-e, it takes 2–3 weeks — with no downtime to your existing international operation.
Do we need to set up a local entity in every country we sell to?
No. This is the biggest misconception about selling internationally. We act as your Importer of Record (IOR) and, where needed, your Merchant of Record (MOR) — meaning we take legal responsibility for importing your products and handling compliance in each market. You stay focused on your brand. We handle the entity layer.
How is OpenBorder different from Global-e or Passport?
Four main differences. First, pricing: we charge 1–2.5% platform fees vs 4–9%, with zero setup fees. Second, coverage: we support Amazon, TikTok Shop, and in-country fulfillment, which neither of them fully does. Third, support: you get a dedicated Slack channel and a growth team working alongside yours, not a ticket system. Fourth, flexibility: you keep your existing carrier rates and 3PL relationships. We don’t force you onto our network. Most brands that switch to us tell us they wish they’d done it sooner.
What does it actually cost to work with OpenBorder?
Zero setup fees. Our platform fee is 1–2.5% of GMV — one of the lowest in the market. No hidden FX markups, no surprise invoices. Shipping, fulfillment, and compliance are billed transparently, so you see exactly what you’re paying for per market. Most brands find that the savings from lower shipping costs, lower payment processing fees, and lower returns more than cover the platform fee.
Can I just use OpenBorder for one thing — like shipping or returns — or do I have to use the full platform?
Yes, you can start with just what you need. Some brands come to us only for cross-border shipping. Others just for DDP shipping. Some only for international returns, and some only for Amazon or TikTok Shop marketplaces. We're modular by design — pick the services that solve your biggest problem today.
